CUSTOM DESIGN FAQ
The cost of a custom piece depends on three things: price of the metal used, price of the gemstone(s) used, and labor. Custom pieces generally cost more than comparable catalogue pieces because they require consultation, design, stone sourcing, fabrication, and ongoing communication. The metal used is generally purchased anew at current market prices; metal prices have been rising.
Yes, a realistic budget helps a lot. It guides Hilary's stone selection, shapes the complexity and style of the piece, and keeps everyone on the same page.
Fill out the form on the Customs page [insert link here] and you'll hear back by email within 1-3 business days. Simple designs can usually be settled over email. If a phone or video call makes more sense, one will be scheduled.
Once the final design is agreed upon, Hilary will send you an estimate, valid for 14 days. Because metal markets move, the final cost may be adjusted, but never by more than 20% of the original quote.
Work begins once a 50% deposit is received and a client contract is signed by both parties. All project deposits are non-refundable.
Every piece is made by Hilary. Engraving and certain types of stone setting are handled by her trusted engraver or stone setter.
She would love to, but sometimes she can't. The deadline may be out of reach, the budget may not fit the design, or the piece may fall outside her design style. Hilary doesn't copy other designers' work.
Anywhere from one month to several, depending on Hilary's workload and the nature of the request.
Hilary works with gem cutters and dealers around the world. Stones from her gemstone collection are available for commissions immediately. Other stones take one week to several months to source. Sourcing is time-intensive and may increase the overall cost.
Yes. You're welcome to use a stone you already own or one from a piece you'd like to repurpose. You will be asked to complete the stone intake form and send photos (or schedule an in-person meeting) with the following details: type, carat weight, measurements (length, width, depth), certifications (GIA, etc.), and current setting. Requests are approved case by case.
Removing and resetting stones carries risk. By consenting to a reset, the client holds Hilary harmless for damage resulting from existing flaws, cracks, chips, or inclusions.
The client. Clients cover all shipping costs to Hilary and assume all liability for the shipment. Claims for loss or damage are the client's responsibility, and the client holds Hilary harmless against them.
When your piece is finished, an invoice will be sent for the final payment.
Yes. To split the balance, an arrangement can be made directly with HFJ. HFJ does not use outside financing companies.
No. All custom pieces are final sale. Custom and special orders are not eligible for refunds, returns, store credit, or exchanges.
If a piece isn't paid in full within 30 days, HFJ may add the piece to the online catalogue. If a client stone was used, it will be removed and returned if the client is unresponsive.
If an order is canceled after production begins, the client is responsible for non-recoverable costs, and the deposit is not returned.
